BUYER GUIDE / COMMERCIAL PLANNING

What actually determines cosmetics MOQ?

MOQ is rarely one factory number. The final threshold is usually set by the highest minimum across formula, filling, components and decoration.

The direct answer

A project MOQ is normally the highest practical threshold created by the formula batch, filling setup, container supplier, decoration process or printed packaging.

This is why two products with the same fill volume can have very different minimums. A stock bottle with a label may allow a smaller launch than a custom-colored bottle with printed artwork and a bespoke cap.

Five common MOQ drivers

  1. Formula batch: mixer size, ingredient purchasing and process loss.
  2. Filling: line setup, cleaning, changeover and fill accuracy.
  3. Primary packaging: bottle, jar, pump, sprayer, cap and closure supplier minimums.
  4. Decoration: color coating, printing, metallization, molds and setup requirements.
  5. Secondary packaging: labels, cartons, inserts, gift boxes and print method.

How buyers can reduce launch risk

A useful RFQ includes: product category, fill volume, target quantity, destination, target cost, packaging references and desired launch date.
