The direct answer
A makeup shade that looks right in one sample can drift between production runs. Batch color consistency is controlled by pigment dispersion, weighing accuracy, filler compatibility and the sampling method, not by the visual result of a single prototype.
Why shade drift happens
Matte and shimmer bases, iron oxides and organic pigments disperse differently. If weighing, premixing or milling is not controlled, the same shade name can arrive lighter, warmer or lower in coverage on a later run. Ask how the factory locks the formula, master batch and production batch reference.
Samples to request before bulk
Request three production-scale references rather than one hand-made sample. Compare them under controlled lighting and on the intended skin or surface, and note shade depth, undertone, coverage and finish together. Ask which tolerance and approval record applies to repeat orders.
Specifications worth freezing
Lock the shade reference code, pigment supplier, fill weight range, net content and packaging before production. A component or supplier change can quietly create a new combination, so require a re-approval sample whenever an input changes.
Frequently asked questions
Is one prototype sample enough to judge color stability?
No. A single handmade sample does not prove how the shade will repeat at production scale.
What causes a later batch to look different?
Weighing, premix, pigment supplier, milling and filler changes can all shift a shade even when the product name stays the same.
Should fill weight be part of the quality agreement?
Yes. Net content and fill tolerance should be confirmed together with the shade reference for repeat orders.
